What are the minimum entry requirements for the architecture course?

Applicants are required to hold at the time of enrolment the established Leaving Certificate (or an approved equivalent) with a minimum of six subjects which must include:  Two H5 (Higher Level) grades and Four 06 (Ordinary Level) grades or four H7 (Higher Level) grades.  Subjects must include Mathematics, Irish or another language, and English.


All applicants to the architecture programme MUST submit a portfolio of creative work. For further information on the portfolio requirement, please refer to the Portfolio and Statement guidelines (available for download here).

Special Mathematics Entrance Examination

Foundation Maths is acceptable to meet the Minimum Maths requirements.

The University holds a special mathematics entrance examination in August each year for students who achieve sufficient CAO entry points and satisfy all other entrance requirements, but who do not achieve the requisite grade in Mathematics in the Leaving Certificate for Faculty of Science and Engineering undergraduate degrees.  Candidates who pass this special examination are deemed to have satisfied the Mathematics entry requirement for all programmes run by the Faculty of Science & Engineering.

Mature Applicants

Applications are particularly welcome from mature candidates (at least 23 years of age on the 1st of January of year of registration).

All mature candidates must apply through the Central Applications Office (CAO) – www.cao.ie. For details please refer to the www.ul.ie/admissions website and the separate SAUL application guidelines.

Mature applicants must also submit a portfolio for assessment. They may subsequently be invited for interview. Interviews are expected to take place by mid-July. The portfolio should demonstrate the candidate’s interest and motivation for studying architecture and how work experience to date supports this motivation. Suitable areas for portfolio presentation are drawing, painting, graphics, photography, woodworking, ceramics, sketchbooks, design journals illustrating the design process followed in a project, printmaking, textiles, dress or clothes making, sculpture, computer game design, or any other visual media that demonstrate your interest, experience, and aptitude in creative and graphic areas.
